  • [24-06-2009] Zend Solution Included in IBM Smart Business
  • Publié sur le site Zend - The PHP Company par  Zend Technologies, Ltd..
Customers benefit from wide variety of PHP applications and the productivity, performance, and low cost of ownership of Zend solution for PHP

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 24, 2009 – Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP company, today announced that IBM will ship Zend's solution for PHP in every IBM Smart Business system in order to provide their customers with reliability, performance, and security for PHP-based Web applications. Today's announcement marks a significant expansion of the IBM and Zend partnership by now including PHP on Linux operating systems and x86 hardware in addition to IBM i OS and Power Systems hardware.

Software vendors participating in IBM's Smart Business market are providing turnkey PHP web applications and will benefit from the high performance and automatic updates available with Zend's web application solution.

Turnkey PHP applications simplify business owner's IT needs. Zend's offering includes PHP in a standardized form that is automatically updated via IBM's integrated support software for applications that are designed for IBM Smart Business systems. This means a business owner's IBM Smart Business system gets a complete, certified PHP stack with automated software updates and security patches. Zend supports the most popular databases, including DB2, as well as broadly used operating systems, including Linux and IBM i.

"Zend plays a key role in IBM's Smart Business strategy to bring the breadth of the vast PHP ecosystem to small and medium businesses. With Zend we're able to provide an integrated, reliable, and high performing business solution that leverages popular PHP applications like CRM, HR management, ERP, supply chain management, and other SMB solutions," said Juhi Jotwani, Vice President, IBM Smart Business. "IBM Smart Business is about a radically simple new way to acquire, use and manage IT."

"With the entire IBM Smart Business program now shipping with Zend, a much broader segment of the business community benefits from PHP's reliability, security, and high performance with our web application environment," said Andi Gutmans, chief executive officer at Zend Technologies. "What's really compelling about today's announcement is that ISVs and business owners participating in the IBM Smart Business program can unlock the power of the wide, open market for PHP applications by deploying them on our platform."

Zend has begun working with independent software vendors (ISVs) who are delivering one-stop PHP-based solutions for IBM's Smart Business program, including vendors such as OpenPro, OrangeHRM, WebConcepts, and vTiger. WebConcepts offers a sophisticated retail inventory planning solution to their customers that is built with PHP.

"It only took 4 clicks on the Smart Business system to install everything, the DB2 database, customizations, restore definitions, the application code... everything! All of this took the skills of multiple people in the past and this is now the simplest, most painless experience I have ever had with IT. I never thought I would say that 'IT stuff' was fun, but this is simply amazing," said Ray Young, chief executive officer at WebConcepts, a PHP-based ISV.

"There is truly huge business value to our company as a provider," Young explained. "With Zend on Smart Business, we are able to eliminate almost all on-site cost. These resources can now be deployed on other tasks and our business customers benefit from a much lower cost of deployment."

"The benefits of Smart Market and Smart Business are that they allow WebConcepts to reach businesses and markets that in the past we could not reach with our PHP applications and deliver them quickly and easily, both for us and for our end-customers."

  • [01-05-2009] New Zend Framework 1.8 Delivers Rapid Application Development (RAD) (...)
  • Publié sur le site Zend - The PHP Company par  Zend Technologies, Ltd..
Open source project benefits PHP developers and managers with new code generation and application management features, including programming support for the Amazon cloud

CUPERTINO, Calif., May 1, 2009 – Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP Company, announced today a new version 1.8 release of Zend Framework.  The project is an open, collaborative web application framework for PHP development and deployment that includes contributions from the open source community and Zend partners.

Rapid application development (RAD) is now possible with Zend Framework 1.8’s automated and customizable creation of PHP-based web applications.  This feature lets users create their own standards and processes for specific business needs when creating Zend Framework-based applications.

Cloud programming support for Amazon’s infrastructure is now also a part of Zend Framework, with both S3 (simple storage service) and EC2 (elastic compute cloud) components to help users quickly build web applications to both store and serve data, and to manage application instances in the Amazon cloud.  Cloud deployment means less upfront investment is needed by organizations seeking to leverage utility computing and scalable services and making some classes of web applications easier to scale and faster to develop.

“With true customizable RAD programming for PHP as well as support for cloud-based development, Zend Framework is the premier choice for businesses ranging from small to very large who are wanting to develop and deploy web applications in the quickest way possible,” said Zeev Suraski, co-founder and chief technology officer at Zend Technologies.

“Zend Framework is clearly the most popular PHP framework for professional use in the industry today and the timing could not have been better—with the availability of Zend Server released earlier this month, users can deploy our enterprise-grade framework and additionally get the performance and reliability of our new web application server,” Suraski continued. “Zend Server has been tuned to be the best solution for running Zend Framework applications in production, bar none.”

Zend Framework is freely available as part of the recently announced Zend Server ( http://www.zend.com/zendserverannounced ), as well as in a standalone download, and is supported by Zend Studio and Zend Server integration points for both development and deployment phases of the web application lifecycle.  Zend Studio’s built-in support allows users to easily code and customize their Zend Framework application in development and specific Zend Framework performance enhancements in Zend Server enable easy, reliable, and high speed deployment in production.  Zend Framework can be obtained as part of the free Zend Server Community Edition available here: http://www.zend.com/products/server/downloads-all

New Zend Framework 1.8 features and their benefits are listed below:

    • Rapid application prototyping is achieved with the Zend_Tool component.  It provides an advanced infrastructure for generating and managing Zend Framework applications.  Zend_Tool comes with a command line client (for instance, just type ‘zf create project’), however its additional remote procedure call-based (RPC) interface allows tooling components to be consumed via other RPC clients that may be custom-built for a user’s business need.  Additionally, while developers may use the provided functionality, they may also drop in their own tooling classes for Zend_Tool to auto-discover and consume—making this a versatile solution for rapid application development and code management.
    • Take your Zend Framework applications to the cloud. Zend Framework 1.8 adds components that support Amazon Web Services S3 and EC2, providing developers with the ability to both store and serve data redundantly for their applications as well as manage virtual machines in Amazon's elastic compute cloud.
    • Zend Server backend for Zend Framework (ZF): use the Zend_Cache ZF component for Zend Server's caching API to dramatically improve the performance of your PHP applications.
    • Re-usable and extensible application bootstrapping and initialization using Zend_Application.  This component provides an object-oriented and configuration-driven mechanism for setting up your PHP environment, for autoloading library code, and for application startup, making it very easy to create reusable and selective resource initialization routines for your particular application.
    • Internationalization with translation-aware web address routing by using locale-specific URLs in your Zend Framework MVC applications, plus locale support in numeric validation components, phone code support for locales, and support for filtering localized data to a normalized form and vice versa.

Other Zend Framework 1.8 updates too numerous to itemize include:

    • Ajax/JavaScript programming updated with Dojo version 1.3 plus arbitrary Dojo dijit types; comprehensive SOAP headers for enterprise data connectivity; Lucene search keyword fields with query strings and search across multiple indices; PDF document page scaling, shifting, and skewing; tag cloud creation and management; configurable site navigation elements like breadcrumbs, sitemaps, menus, and more; file upload progress meters for console and web applications; and JavaScript callbacks and literals for JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data transfers.

Customers benefit from higher productivity, cost savings, and an integrated suite of Zend PHP solutions,
from development and testing to deployment and maintenance

CUPERTINO, Calif., April 7, 2009 – Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP company, announced today the general availability of Zend Server, a Web application server that offers new levels of reliability, performance, and security for PHP-based Web applications. With a focus on usability and native updates, customers benefit from a complete IT-ready solution that also integrates Zend Studio for Eclipse and Zend Framework to make it faster and easier than ever before to develop and deploy rich, reliable, and secure Web applications using PHP.

The new Zend Server is a complete Web application solution that includes PHP, native install, an enhanced code accelerator, and advanced monitoring and problem diagnostics for applications designed for deployment on a single server. In addition, Zend Server automates software updates, hot fixes, and security patches on both Linux (native RPM and DEB based repositories) and Microsoft Windows (MSI), for quick and easy installation in less than 5 minutes. Zend Server supports the most popular databases, including Oracle® Database, MySQL, and Microsoft® SQL Server, as well as leading operating systems from Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu/Debian to Microsoft Windows Server and more.

“With our new Zend Server, it’s never been easier for customers to build and deploy on PHP even in the most demanding production environments,” said Eldad Maniv, vice president of marketing & products for Zend Technologies. “With this new release, customers will see dramatic improvements in performance, security, and reliability on top of the enterprise-class support and service that they have come to expect from our commercial solutions.”

“With more than 80 million users on our social network site – running our PHP-based social networking platform that is deployed on hundreds of servers – performance is a top priority at Tagged.com,” said Johann Schleier-Smith, founder and CTO at Tagged.com.  “Tagged has been growing exponentially, and Zend has been supporting our growth for over five years.  Zend Server’s production-level SLA support, including PHP updates--we have received critical fixes through this mechanism in the past, for specific PHP extensions--plus security hot fixes, and built-in byte code acceleration, are all absolutely essential to providing the reliability and responsiveness our users demand.

“In testing, we have measured significantly better performance with Zend Server than we were experiencing before,” remarked Schleier-Smith.  “We’re pleased that Zend has raised the bar for PHP performance and reliability with this next generation Web application server and its SLA-based support subscription.”

In addition to new benefits for performance, reliability, simplified deployment, and PHP application management, Zend Server gives customers the advantage of a global ecosystem of commercial and open source developers, systems integrators, and technology partners, including Microsoft and Oracle.

“Microsoft and Zend have collaborated for more than three years to make PHP a first-class citizen on Microsoft Windows.  Zend Server encapsulates the various efforts made by both companies and the community to deliver a reliable, scalable, out-of-the-box experience for running business-critical PHP applications on Windows,” said Bill Staples, general manager of Web platform and tools at Microsoft Corp.  “This continues our strategy to deliver choice and interoperability to our customers, and we are committed to continue supporting PHP on Windows.”

Oracle and Zend have a long-standing relationship to enable IT organizations to leverage the security, performance, and reliability of both Zend Server and Oracle Database for their PHP development and deployment needs.

“Oracle’s unique position as a complete software infrastructure provider is enhanced by our collaboration with Zend and their release today of Zend Server.  Customers with PHP implementations can now benefit from Oracle-specific features including database resident connection pooling support, and the unparalleled reliability, security, and performance of Oracle Database 11g.  They can also take advantage of Oracle’s unique high availability and scalability capabilities with Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Data Guard,” said Mike Hichwa, vice president for software development at Oracle.  “We are confident that our customers will realize even greater gains from the combination of Zend Server with Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Enterprise Linux.”

First-ever Zend Server Community Edition gives developers and users
an easy, all-in-one, faster way to run PHP applications

CUPERTINO, Calif., April 7, 2009 – Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP company, announced today the general availability of Zend Server Community Edition, a web application server that offers both ease-of-use and better performance in one simple package for PHP-based Web applications. This free to download version is available now at: http://www.zend.com/products/server/downloads-all

“Zend’s mission is to give customers a suite of world-class solutions built around the advantages of PHP that helps them throughout the entire Web application lifecycle, from development to production,” said Andi Gutmans, CEO and co-founder of Zend Technologies. “We’re committed to giving developers and others a simple, quick, out-of-the-box experience to create, maintain, and run PHP-based Web applications.  Our new Zend Server Community Edition (CE) completes the suite that includes the open-source Zend Framework and PHP Development Tools (PDT) projects that we lead and sponsor, so that for the first time developers can test and deploy their PHP applications at no cost on our server platform and realize the benefits of our latest improvements in consistency, performance, and usability when deploying them in non-critical settings.”

Zend Server CE is a completely free version of Zend Server that runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X, specifically tuned to address the needs of non-critical server deployments and for developer desktops/laptops everywhere.  Zend Server CE comes with the same high-performance opcode caching and easy-to-use PHP administration capabilities as the commercial Zend Server.  The Zend Server commercial subscription also announced today additionally provides technical support, application monitoring and diagnostics, and page-caching for even higher performance—all features that commercial users require to maximize the efficiency of their business-critical PHP applications.

“As PHP transitions from a dynamic, disruptive technology within enterprises to a mainstream technology option, it will be critical for it to be as manageable as the languages and platforms that preceded it,” said Stephen O'Grady, principal at RedMonk, a leading technology analyst firm. “With the introduction of a community-supported server product, Zend is providing the PHP community with the tooling and infrastructure that IT management is familiar with and relies upon, thus smoothing the way for broad adoption.”

Zend Server is the platform of choice for deploying open-source PHP and Zend Framework-based PHP applications, including rich Internet applications (RIAs) built on various client-side technologies such as the open-source Flex framework on the Adobe® Flash® platform and Dojo Toolkit or JQuery on JavaScript.

“Adobe is pleased that Zend Server tightly integrates with Zend Framework because of its strong support for the open-source Flex framework.  With the Zend Server Community Edition, PHP developers using the Flex framework can now enjoy a community-supported all-in-one PHP stack for deploying RIAs,” said Michele Turner, vice president of product marketing and developer relations for the Platform Business Unit at Adobe.  “Enterprise customers searching for the most cost-effective and productive way to create rich Internet applications will benefit from an integrated PHP stack like Zend Server as it will help increase development productivity even further.”

With a simple, 5 minute install Zend Framework and PHP RIAs and other popular PHP applications like Drupal CMS, SugarCRM, and more, can now be deployed easily, quickly, and with higher performance using Zend Server Community Edition.

Zend Server CE demonstrates the commitment of Zend Technologies to developer communities worldwide, regardless of operating system platform of choice.  Developers in the Windows community for example, are seeing more and more benefits of PHP in their Microsoft environments, including significant performance gains.

“Our firm’s partnership with Zend has altered the landscape for us in providing high-performance PHP on the Windows platform. In our own in-house stress testing using JMeter, we’ve maxed out 8 CPU cores at 100% executing thousands of PHP requests, and pages return quickly and without errors.  This simply wasn’t possible before,” said John Chertudi, systems administrator at Rubicon International, an educational technology services firm.  “We are able to design and support stable, high performing PHP applications on Windows thanks to the work done by Microsoft and Zend.”

Zend Delivers Fully Integrated Web Solution on IBM i
Zend’s PHP-based Web Stack To Ship On All IBM i Servers

Cupertino, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—February 5, 2009—Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP Company, announced today that it is teaming with IBM to preload Zend’s Web stack with every shipment of IBM i software, the integrated operating environment for IBM Power Systems, including all hardware that ships with IBM i.  Zend’s PHP-based Web solution stack lets customers Web enable IBM i assets and includes support on IBM i for rapid application development and Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). With PHP, IBM i users also get immediate access to a vast ecosystem of market leading PHP applications and a large professional developer community.

Since the start of IBM and Zend’s joint partnership more than 12,000 IBM i customers from 150 countries have obtained Zend products for IBM i and PHP has been utilized by i customers in rolling out business-critical Web applications.  With Zend Core, Zend’s Web solution stack, now bundled with the IBM i operating environment, IBM customers now enjoy an out-of-the-box experience with PHP on both the IBM i 5.4 and IBM i 6.1 implementations.

“Today’s announcement is an expansion of the relationship between the two companies to further enhance PHP-based offerings for IBM i customers,” said Scott Handy, Vice President, Worldwide Marketing,  Strategy, and Sales Support, IBM Power Systems. “Our customers asked for PHP and we brought Zend PHP to the platform. The enthusiasm for—and utilization of—Zend PHP has exceeded our expectations.”

PHP is the most popular Web development language due to its ease of use and enterprise-grade functionality.  More than 22 million Internet domains deploy PHP including Yahoo! and Facebook.  PHP’s large developer community is estimated at close to 5 million and also enjoys a rich application eco-system including the popular Drupal content management system.  PHP's popularity has accelerated rapidly over recent years due to its flexibility and ease of use in building modern web applications and web services, including its much heralded support on IBM i operating environments.

Zend Technologies has worked with IBM for more than three years to deliver PHP-based products, support, services, and education for IBM i.  Recently, based on feedback from IBM i customers, Zend has delivered a 5250 bridge to simplify the modernization and extension of business applications.  Zend Framework can also be used with IBM i to rapidly and easily build industrial-strength web applications in PHP.

“We have worked with midsize and large i clients to run PHP applications ranging from complete order management systems, to web-enabling their green screen ERP systems, to leveraging the vast open source application portfolio that continues to grow every day,” said Andi Gutmans, CEO at Zend Technologies.  “In addition, IBM & Zend business partners are generating revenue by web-enabling green screen applications and building new web-based applications, reducing costs and extending the long life of this powerful platform.”

Customers and Partners Using IBM i
“We’re heavy users of IBM i” said John Horner IBM Power Systems programming manager at APi Group, a billion dollar conglomerate with home security, transportation/distribution, and specialty construction interests.  “Rather than move to a brand name ERP system implementation estimated to cost 8 figures+ and take 3 years to implement, we were able to significantly reduce our risk, stay on IBM Power Systems platforms, and completely modernize our applications using Zend Solutions for PHP.  We completed this project at 1/10 the cost and in only 18 months!”

“Everyone knows that Business Partners—for instance VARs/SIs and consultants like myself—are experiencing margin compression and Zend’s PHP solutions present an additional revenue stream for us, which is key,” said Larry Nies, President of NSC.   “As a whole PHP runs faster, accesses the database quicker, and is easier for the RPG-minded developer to become proficient in, than other web languages (Net.data, CGIDEV2, Java, etc.)  Using Zend’s solution suite we can often deliver our implementations in 50-80% less time than competing solutions.”

Mark Burton said, “I am thrilled to be joining Zend’s board of directors and am looking forward to working with Andi on realizing Zend’s strategic opportunity.  Zend is uniquely positioned to take full advantage of PHP’s growth in driving business critical Web applications.”

Eclipse Announces Latest PHP Development Tools (PDT)

Ottawa, Canada—January 21, 2008—The Eclipse Foundation is pleased to announce a major upgrade to the popular Eclipse PHP Development Tools (PDT) project.  PDT is an open source development tool that provides all the basic code editing capabilities developers need to get started developing PHP applications.  The focus of the PDT 2.0 release is to add support for the object-oriented programming features of PHP and to improve the overall user experience of the PDT environment.

To support the object-oriented features of PHP, PDT 2.0 now includes:
    •    Type Hierarchy view that navigates object-oriented PHP code faster and more easily.
    •    Type and method navigation that allows for easy searching of PHP code based on type information.
    •    Override indicators that visually tag PHP methods that have been overridden.

Usability improvements to PDT 2.0 include:
    •    A new indexing and caching engine, based on the Eclipse Dynamic Language Toolkit (DLTK), which significantly improves the overall performance of common PDT operations.
    •    A new Mark Occurrences indicator that make it easier for developers to see where an element is referenced.
    •    More sophisticated Code Assist feature that is smarter about providing code completion options based on PHP variable types.

The enhancements provided by release 2.0 make PDT a compelling choice for anyone looking to build simple PHP applications. PDT 2.0 is also ideal for Java programmers that want to write PHP code by providing them with an environment similar to the Eclipse Java Development Tools (JDT) they are already familiar with.

“PDT is one of our most popular downloads at Eclipse,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation.  “Since the initial release it has been downloaded over 1 million times,” he continued.  “Clearly PDT adoption has been very successful in the Eclipse and PHP communities.”

“Release 2.0 demonstrates our continued commitment to the Eclipse community,” said Andi Gutmans, co-founder and SVP R&D and Alliances at Zend Technologies, contributor to the PDT project, “PDT is not only the premier open source PHP development tool, but is also the basis for Zend’s commercial, professional-grade IDE for PHP, Zend Studio for Eclipse. Additionally, in order to further align with Eclipse, PDT will become part of the Eclipse Galileo simultaneous release.”

PDT is now available for download at www.eclipse.org/pdt.

  • [19-11-2008] New, Faster Zend Framework 1.7
  • Publié sur le site Zend - The PHP Company par  Zend Technologies, Ltd..
New, Faster Zend Framework 1.7 Features Adobe High-Speed Format for RIAs plus IBM i DB2 Adapter, JQuery, & Dojo 1.2.1

Zend PHP Project Now Speedier, Gains Significant Momentum with IBM i, additional AJAX support, & Adobe Contribution of AMF for PHP-based Adobe Flash & Flex Web Applications

Adobe MAX Conference, San Francisco, CA—November 19, 2008—Zend Technologies, Inc. announced today at Adobe Systems’ annual gathering of web designers and software development professionals that they have jointly delivered support in Zend Framework 1.7 for Action Message Format (AMF), a key element of their partnership to improve rich Internet application development.

Zend Framework 1.7 also features significant performance enhancements, speeding load times by 25%-50%, makes available for general release a native DB2 Adapter to access DB2/400 data on the IBM i platform, updates Dojo Toolkit support (including a new editor dijit), and also provides, through a Zend Framework community contribution, a component for the popular JQuery AJAX library.

“Over the life of the Zend Framework project, with close to 9.5 million downloads since project inception, momentum and community support has consistently continued to grow,” said Andi Gutmans, CTO, Sr. VP R&D and Alliances, and co-founder at Zend. “New to this release is a native DB2 driver for the fast-growing IBM i platform, plus we’ve incorporated our agile continuous integration process for IBM i meaning Zend Framework on i5/OS gets unit-tested thoroughly and continuously as we make changes to the code.”

“We’re particularly proud that in Zend Framework 1.7 the community contributions make up well over half of the new and improved components,” continued Gutmans, “including a component for the JQuery AJAX JavaScript library.  We’re also really happy that Adobe Systems has joined the Zend Framework project as a contributor with a new AMF component supporting their Flex framework and the Flash Platform, part of a larger partnership with them, which also includes cooperation aimed to ensure their FlexBuilder environment works with our Zend Studio PHP development environment on the Eclipse platform.”

Zend Framework is a Zend-sponsored open source PHP application framework best known for its support for flexible, efficient creation of web applications. The Flex framework is a highly productive, open source framework from Adobe for building and maintaining expressive Web applications that deploy consistently across all major browsers and operating systems using Adobe® Flash Player.

Integration of AMF support into Zend Framework means PHP developers can now use the open, binary, high?speed format to enable their applications built with Adobe Flex® and Adobe Flash® to easily and rapidly exchange data with their servers.

PHP developers can now immediately download the latest release of Zend Framework 1.7 and leverage the fast, reliable transfer of data between the server and client tiers of their web applications.  To download Zend Framework’s latest version or to learn more, please visit http://framework.zend.com and for more details & tutorials on using the AMF component, please visit http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/flex_php.html

“Adobe Flex and Flash are being rapidly adopted by developers, enterprise IT departments and independent software providers who rely on the power and capabilities of PHP,” said Michele Turner, vice president, product marketing and management at Adobe. “Today, we?ve enabled those developers using Flex and Zend Framework to rapidly deliver rich, highly engaging web applications to both the browser and the desktop.”

One customer already making use of the new Action Message Format support in Zend Framework is Synapse Group, an interactive agency with creative artists and software developers jointly building high-touch web technology for Fortune 100 clientele, so they can effectively engage consumers:

“Our mission is to create unforgettable user experiences. Zend’s solutions have allowed us to do just that.  Support in Zend Framework for Adobe’s Flash Platform means we can integrate our rich Adobe Flex and Flash front-end user interfaces with our PHP-driven back-end platforms much faster and more reliably, while delivering high-value for our clients and for our own technology platform offerings,” said Zach Saltzberg, Founder and Creative Director at Synapse Group.  “We have leveraged Zend & Adobe’s technology to develop our latest products and platforms, including Syndeca – our rich media publishing platform in use by Fortune 100 companies, Plexity – our customized tracking & analytics solution, and Sharality - a viral sharing, auto-installing tool connecting the social web."

“Zend_Amf delivers many advantages over other AMF back-ends—like a vibrant open source community and wide support.  As early adopters of AMF technology for web application development, we’re happy that Zend & Adobe have delivered this key technology together so we can have all our application components standardized on one framework and a single application stack,” says Kai Harris, Director of Operations at Synapse Group. “This simplifies our internal development and test process, as well as reduces the operations overhead needed to manage our application clusters."

Zend Hosts Fourth Annual ZEND/PHP Conference and Announces New Products and Partner Initiatives

Announcement with Adobe, New Zend Core for IBM i, New Zend Studio Version 6.1  and New Zend Engineer Certification Program for Zend Framework Highlight Start of World’s Largest PHP Conference

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIASeptember 16, 2008 - Today at ZendCon, the fourth annual Zend/PHP Conference, Zend took steps to further advance PHP’s capabilities as the premier platform for business-critical web applications, including an initiative to strengthen enterprise use of PHP with IBM and for building Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) in collaboration with Adobe and the Ajax community.

ZendCon is the world’s largest gathering of the PHP community and for companies using PHP to build business-critical web applications.  It is the annual meeting place for an ecosystem that includes the world’s largest software companies, innovative web start-ups and leading-edge developers from more than 30 countries.

The conference’s theme is "High Impact PHP", with Zend's CEO Harold Goldberg delivering the opening keynote by discussing the ever increasing impact of PHP on businesses, communities and individuals.  More than 70 sessions will discuss the business cases and best practices for using PHP to create rich internet applications, powerful web services, modern web applications for IBM i (i5/OS), optimized web applications on the Windows platform, and much more.

At the opening of the conference today Zend announced partner initiatives and product updates that underscore the increasing importance and maturity of PHP:
    •    Zend announced that they will collaborate with Adobe to make it easier to develop rich Internet applications based on PHP and the free, open source Flex framework.  As part of the collaboration Adobe will help to integrate Action Message Format (AMF) support into Zend Framework, which enables high bandwidth data integration between server-side PHP and client-side Flex data and logic components. This makes it easier for PHP to be used in combination with Flex, Ajax and Adobe AIR to deliver RIAs to the desktop. The companies also plan to enhance the experience for developers using their development environments (Zend Studio and Adobe Flex Builder) and to create special websites to educate users of PHP with Flex.
    •    Zend and the Dojo Foundation are collaborating to deliver an out-of-the-box solution for building Ajax-based web applications with Zend Framework and Dojo Toolkit.  Zend Framework 1.6, which was released earlier this month, is the first version of Zend Framework to offer the Dojo integration.
    •    Zend announced the immediate availability of Zend Core for i5/OS 2.6, the latest certified PHP stack specifically designed for IBM i5/OS and used to deploy business critical web applications on IBM i platforms.  This release improves security, includes the latest Zend Framework 1.6, and includes extensions that make it easier for PHP to access native resources on the i5.
    •    Zend shipped a new version of Zend Studio (6.1), the leading PHP IDE that allows developers to take advantage of the sophisticated, feature-rich Eclipse framework. The new version adds support for Zend Framework & Dojo Toolkit integration, making Ajax Javascript-based rich web applications easier to build and deliver.
    •    Zend also announced a new examination leading to the certification “Zend Certified Engineer (ZCE) for Zend Framework.”  ZCE for Zend Framework complements the existing ZCE for PHP certification which has already certified over 3,500 ZCEs.  Zend Certification sets the industry standard for PHP certifications, recognizing outstanding expertise and delivering a measure of distinction for PHP 5 and Zend Framework developers by utilizing exam topics specified by a neutral board of top PHP experts and community members worldwide.

”The high degree of interest for the conference matches the interest for PHP solutions we witness in the market and growing participation from major companies like Adobe, IBM and Microsoft,” said Harold Goldberg, Zend’s CEO.  “This year ZendCon will again be larger and more exciting than ever.  I’m proud that we are able to offer a PHP conference so rich in topics, covering the business and technology of PHP, from participants who are new to PHP, all the way to the world’s leading PHP experts.”
